Netflix Acquires Chinese Fantasy Film ‘The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity’

Netflix is adding fantasy film 'The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity' to its pool of high-profile Chinese commercial movies. The feature, directed by youth-favorite filmmaker Guo Jingming, will debut on Netflix on Feb. 5, 2021 in every market where the streamer is active.

The film is an adaptation of Japanese author by Baku Yumemakura’s blockbuster fantasy novel Onmyoji, which has spawned countless comic book, TV, movie and video game adaptations across Asia since its first publication in 1986.Guo, who is best known for his Tiny Times franchise, which earned over $300 million in China, also wrote the new Chinese adaptation. The film has been set for a Christmas Day theatrical release in China.The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity tells the story of the four best Yin-Yang Masters of the country, called to the capital to slay the Serpent demon — the most powerful demon on earth who awakens every 100 years. In the meantime, a conspiracy between the Princess and the head of the Royal Guard to claim the Serpent’s eternal life is unveiled.The film stars Mark Chao (Saturday Fiction), Allen Deng (Ashes of Love), Olivia Wang (The Postmodern Life of My Aunt) and Jessie Li (Port of Call). An international effort, the film’s creative team includes veteran Japanese composer Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell, Ip Man 4), South-Korean VFX studio 4th Creative Party (Okja, Snowpiercer) and Chinese Production Designer Tu Nan (Legend of the Demon Cat).The film is produced by Hehe Pictures, ZUI, Thinkingdom Pictures, state-backed Shanghai Film Group and Black Ant Film.The Netflix deal was negotiated by Clement Magar, GM of Fortissimo Films, which is handling international sales on the title.Netflix’s past pickups of tentpole Chinese films have included the sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth, teen thriller Animal World and romantic drama Us and Them.
